Planning for a Move D-I-Y

Gulf Islands Downsizing and Estates is your most effective partner in helping you transition from the your current home to your new home. When facing the rather daunting task of where to begin your downsizing journey the tried and true methods can help considerably, tasks we can perform for you, or if you choose you can try these simple steps:

To Prepare
Gather supplies: boxes, markers, labels, trash bags, tape, phone for photos, measuring tape.
• Set a timer for 1–2 hour sessions so you don’t fatigue.

Start with the large items first
• Measure doorways, stair widths, elevator limits and the new home’s rooms to confirm what fits.
• Large-item decision rules:
• Keep if it’s essential, used weekly, or fits your new space and style.
• Sell or donate if it’s in good condition but won’t fit your new space or you no longer need it.
• Discard if it’s damaged beyond reasonable repair or hazardous to move.

Room-by-room process (repeat for each room)
• Clear a staging area such as a hallway or daylight spot where you can see everything.
• Pull everything out of drawers, shelves, and closets so items aren’t overlooked.
• For each item, ask: Do I use this? Does it fit/serve me in the new home? Is it worth the cost/time to move? Is it valuable to someone else? Is it sentimental?
• Place items in boxes or piles immediately and label boxes/bags - be careful not to create obstructions or tripping hazards.

Handling sentimental items
• Use the “one-in, one-out” or “top-shelf limit” rule: pick a defined number of keepsakes per person or per room.
• If many sentimental items: photograph larger collections and create a digital album (also something Gulf Islands Downsizing and Estates can do for you); consider keeping a small curated selection.
• For heirlooms: document provenance if you wish and designate recipients now to reduce future family disputes.

Sell vs Donate guidance
• Sell: furniture, antiques, appliances, electronics in good working condition—use online marketplaces, consignment, or estate sale or auction. Price realistically; factor in pickup/delivery hassles.
• Donate: gently used items local charities accept (check accepted item lists).

Discard and recycling
• Dispose of hazardous items properly (paint, solvents, batteries, old electronics) at community hazardous-waste sites.
• Recycle metals, papers, and plastics per local rules. For large disposals, hire a junk-removal service.

Quick rules to speed decisions
• If unused for 12+ months — Sell/Donate or Discard.
• Duplicate items — keep the best one only.
• “Maybe” items — put in a sealed “Maybe” box with a 6–12 month date; donate if unopened by then.

The Final sweep
• Make an inventory of valuable items and important documents; photograph condition for sale or insurance.
